Choosing the right pallet racking system is not always straightforward. Every warehouse operates differently, and the storage solution needs to reflect that.
In this expert insight, we speak with Daisy Moody from Advanced Handling & Storage Ltd about what businesses should consider before specifying pallet racking.
My name is Daisy Moody and I have worked at Advanced Handling & Storage for over two years. I joined the company as a Sales Admin Apprentice and have since completed my Level 3 Business Sales Administrator qualification.
In my current role, I work closely with customers to understand their storage requirements and ensure the correct pallet racking materials are specified and supplied for their warehouse.
Every business has different requirements. The type of goods being stored, the weight per pallet, ceiling height, available floor space, and operational workflow all influence which system is most suitable.
On paper, pallet racking can appear very similar across different brands and layouts. In reality, small differences in beam capacity, frame depth, or system configuration can have a significant impact on safety and usability.
It is not simply about fitting racking into a space. It is about making sure the system supports safe loading, efficient movement of stock, and long-term reliability.
Before making any recommendation, we first need to understand how the warehouse operates.
Some of the key questions we ask include:
These details help us determine the appropriate beam sections, frame strengths, and overall layout configuration.
Without this information, there is a risk of under-specifying the system, which could compromise safety, or over-specifying it, which can increase costs unnecessarily.
Forklift type and aisle width have a direct impact on both safety and space utilisation within a warehouse.
Different trucks require different turning circles and operating clearances. For example, a counterbalance forklift typically requires wider aisles than a reach truck.
If aisle widths are too narrow, the risk of impact damage increases. If they are too wide, valuable storage space is lost.
When assessing a project, we look carefully at how materials will be loaded and unloaded day to day. The aim is always to find the right balance between safe operation and efficient use of available floor space.
Second hand pallet racking can be a sensible option when budgets are tight or when shorter lead times are required.
It is often more cost-effective than purchasing new racking and can also be a more environmentally responsible choice, as it extends the lifespan of existing materials.
However, suitability and condition are critical. Compatibility with existing systems, correct load capacities, and the structural integrity of the racking must always be carefully assessed.
When these checks are carried out properly, second hand racking can provide excellent value without compromising performance.
Installing racking in an operational warehouse always requires careful planning.
The main challenge is avoiding disruption to day-to-day operations. Pausing production or dispatch can be costly, so we often recommend phased installations where possible.
This approach allows sections of the warehouse to remain operational while work is carried out in controlled stages.
Clear communication, safe segregation of working areas, and realistic scheduling are all essential to minimise risk and maintain workflow.
Choosing the right pallet racking system is about more than selecting frames and beams. It involves understanding how your warehouse operates, what your stock requires, and how your team works on a day-to-day basis.
At Advanced Handling & Storage Ltd, we focus on asking the right questions first. This helps ensure the solution we provide is practical, safe, and suitable for long-term use.
