I wish to install some adjustable pallet racking outside. We already have some indoor racking which complies with the SEMA code of practice and is inspected regularly.
Are there an extra checks that we need to carry out on the racking which is outside and how do we ensure that everything complies with regards to rusting the upright/beams.
Answer
We would always need to know if he racking was to be sorted internally or externally before offering a quote. This is because we would always quote galvanised external racking if it is going to be used outside.
The normal painted finish on racking provides very little corrosion protection for external racking, which therefore rusts in quite a short space of time. The racking is not painted internally and can therefore rust from the inside out.
On an inspection we would be able to advise if we think the racking will last or if it needs replacing.
Ideally a galvanised finish on the eternal racking would be used as this does not corrode and can withstand through the harshest weather conditions.
When being installed we would also ensure that the racking is erected by a SEIRS approved installer.
