Multi Tier Shelving System

Why You Need Pallet Racking Safety Inspections

At Advanced Handling & Storage, we specialise in all aspects of pallet racking safety and storage to improve warehouse operations and increase storage.

We pride ourselves on being able to provide a thorough pallet racking inspection service, which is always completed by an independent SEMA approved racking inspector.

What is a pallet racking safety inspection?

A pallet racking inspection, also sometimes referred to as a rack damage survey, is a thorough assessment of the quality and condition of your pallet racking system.

This type of assessment can also be carried out for mezzanine floors, shelving, and other storage systems that may be at risk of damage from operating machinery or equipment used during warehouse operations.

A safety inspection will not only assess the damage and identify it but it will also highlight any risk of future damage to your pallet racking system. The report uses a traffic light coding system to help you understand the various levels of risk.

Red

Very serious damage that requires immediate attention and racking replaced. Must not be put back into use until the damaged material has been replaced.

Amber

Serious damage and over the SEMA advised tolerances. Once unloaded but not be used until replacements have been forced.

Green

Racking is damaged but within SEMA guidelines, must be continually monitored, usually within the remit of the in-house inspection. Any future impacts must be reported, and racking but be re-inspected in line with the SEMA guidelines.

Why should you have a pallet racking inspection?

If you use a pallet racking system, or any other type of storage system, under current legislation (The Health and Safety At Work Act 1974 and the PUWER Regulations), then it will lawfully require regular inspections by a SEMA approved racking inspector.

A pallet racking safety inspection is advised to be carried out on a 12 month basis.

Carrying out regular safety checks is not only a sensible thing to do as a business but is a critical part of business management. Pallet racking safety inspections can help reduce insurance premium and overall maintenance costs.

Insurance companies actively encourage businesses to participate in safety audits because failure to do so could affect the result of an insurance claim, should you need to submit one.
