10 Things To Consider When Buying Cantilever Racking

Not all cantilever racking is created equal. Depending on what you are storing, it can have significant influence on the type of structural cantilever racking you choose for your warehouse. Knowing the capabilities and the properties of your storage items will allow you to choose racking that is safe, efficient and effective.

Steps

Length of the product you are storing – The length of the product helps determine how much space you need between braces. Another consideration is weight. The combined effect of the length and weight of the product to be stored helps narrow down your choices between light, medium, heavy and heavy duty racking.

Space available for racking – The next thing to know is how much room you have in your warehouse or outdoor storage area. Take measurements of horizontal, vertical and row space.

Single or double-sided cantilever racks – Finally, determine how to make the most of the available space. In wide open areas, having double-sided racking provides twice the storage at half again the space. Even with space, the storage material can have an impact on this decision. Are you going to store enough of like items on both sides? Will one side require a completely different configuration?

Components

Column – The column is backbone of the racking. What is being stored will impact its thickness and height. They are punched with positioning holes so that the arms can be placed at three inch intervals, as well as for joints and cross braces to attach to the core at predetermined points.

Arm – The arm extends to support the product. These can come out at ninety degrees or at lesser degrees to provide extra security and support. They vary in length from 18 to 100 inches.

Base – The columns fit into the base, which is secured to the ground. The base supports the combined weight of product and racking and comes in various sizes to accommodate up to 6,000 pounds.

Horizontal bracing – This is the back braces that connect the columns to one another at different points along the height to provide stability.

Diagonal bracing – The diagonal braces help ensure the unit stays together and is not weakened or driven apart by the pressure on the horizontal bracing.

Bolt Bracing Tab – These tabs protect the bolts from impact as well as secure them to reduce the risk of injury to employees or damage to equipment in passing.

Pipe stop – This attachment is inserted at the end of the arm stops to prevent product from rolling off of the end of the arm.
