What is pallet racking?

Pallet racking is a storage system used to group goods onto pallets to create a load that helps make storage and transportation of the goods easier.

The idea is to group the most used goods in warehouses and distribution centres. Racking these days is designed to store especially heavy loads that are often seen in operations nowadays.

Racking is designed to comply with standard measurements of forklift machines and operating tools commonly used in warehouses.

What are the main types of pallet racking?

Adjustable racking

This type of racking is the most common and arguably the most simple to operate with. It is designed to mechanically store pallets using forklifts that run parallel to each row of the racking.

A pallet racking system like this requires a fairly wide surface for its installation but it provides quick and direct access to all unit loads stored. It is also highly versatile and adaptable. 

VNA racking

Very narrow aisle racking (VNA) is an adaptation of the adjustable racking system but with better use of available space in the warehouse. 

The width of the aisles is reduced in order to reduce the floor space required for installation. This type of racking gives direct access to all pallets being stored but narrow aisle forklifts are needed to operate the warehouse.

Drive in and drive through racking

A high density type of pallet racking, drive in and drive through options optimise the available space in a warehouse. With this system, work aisles are eliminated and a forklift machine enters the racking to load and unload pallets.

Double deep racking

Yet another adaptation of the adjustable racking system, double deep pallet racking is modified to increase storage capacity in warehouses.

Optimisation is achieved by adding an extra position at the back of the racking for pallets. This makes for better storage capacity, however means there is less selectivity and direct access to unit loads.

Push back racking

A push back pallet racking storage system follows a ‘last in, first out’ method. When a forklift loads a new pallet, it pushes the pallet before it to the back.
