Automated Pallet Racking

Is Used Pallet Racking Reliable?

When it comes to choosing pallet racking for your business, many people ask the question “is used pallet racking reliable?” and the answer is yes, it can be.

It all comes down to condition and use but at Advanced Handling & Storage we offer only fantastic quality systems that are cleaned and quality checked before being offered to customers as warehouse storage solutions.

As far as used racking goes, aesthetic condition shows a lot about how old a component is and where it has been stored. Some wear can be purely aesthetic but dents, twists, bends, broken welds and advanced rust are causes for concern.

At Advanced Handling & Storage we do all of the hard work for you when it comes to inspecting racking. We always ensure that the second hand pallet racking we sell on is fit for purpose and safe for operations.

However, here are some important things to look out for when choosing used racking for your business.

Advanced rust

Used pallet racking naturally accumulates surface rust due to paint failure, along with exposure to humidity levels. While this doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing, surface rust will not affect the strength of the structural components.

However, components that are showing rust should be evaluated for obvious holes and pits that are caused by advanced rust. Advanced rust below the surface will compromise the strength of steel and can be a major concern.

Generally, remember that these components are designed to demonstrate extreme strength and withstand cosmetic flaws. That being said, deeper rust around particularly susceptible points should be taken seriously.

Damaged beams

Minor dents in the face of a pallet racking beam will not affect the capacity but deeper dents of an inch or more could. Beams that are twisted or bent won’t fit in your used pallet racking system and should be discarded.

We take the time and care to fully inspect used pallet racking beams and present our products professionally. If you are inspecting your existing beams, it’s important to remember that they deflect slightly with significant weight on them.

We offer safety inspections for businesses with pallet racking systems, should you require it. A SEMA approved racking inspector will carry out a comprehensive inspection and advise you of any areas of concern when it comes to damaged beams.

Damaged uprights

Damaged uprights are the biggest cause for concern when it comes to used pallet racking. Uprights carry all the weight of the storage system and are extremely susceptible to forklift impact.

Near the ground, dents, twists, and broken welds are very common and can become weak points for the entire system. But what is acceptable and what is not?

As a general rule, upright posts should not deflect more than half an inch in any direction from its manufactured form. Any uprights with sheared steel or broken welds are unsafe and they should all have their cross-struts and footplates.
